Background
The Civil Service Occupational Health Department (CSOHD) operates within the Office of the Civil
Service Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and are part of the Department of Public Expenditure NDP
Delivery and Reform.
The CSOHD provides occupational health services, and the CMO provides policy advice on work and
health issues in the Civil Service and wider public service.
This service is provided across the following areas:
• Civil Service Departments and Offices
• The Public Appointments Service
• The Irish Prison Service
The CSOHD is responsible for providing the following services:
• Review and workplace rehabilitation of employees with health problems
• Statutory health surveillance programmes e.g., audiology
• Statutory occupational immunisation programmes e.g. Hepatitis B
• Occupational Health Promotion Screening onsite
• Ill Health Retirement & Critical Illness Pay Assessments
• Advice to the Public Appointments Service regarding pre-placement health assessments
• Medical advice on promotion /transfers within the Civil Service

The medical staff of the CMO’s Office consists of the Civil Service Chief Medical Officer, three
Occupational Health Physicians and currently three Occupational Health Nurses. The work of the office
is also supported by administrative staff.
The CMO’s office is seeking to appoint additional Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) to assist in
providing and developing the occupational health service for the Civil and Public Service.
A panel will be formed to fill future expected vacancies that may arise. Part time OHN posts may also
be filled from this panel.

The Role
The core components of the OHN role are day-to-day responsibility for nurse lead pre-employment
medicals, health surveillance, immunisations and health promotion initiatives.
They also work collaboratively with the relevant Occupational Physician in regard to first line case
management, conducting both telephone and face to face consultations.
OHNs will also from time to time assist with the management of the department. This may be directly
with the CMO or someone designated by the CMO. This includes (but is not limited to) conducting
relevant audit/research, assisting data access applications, OH IT system development and
maintaining the Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Service (SEQOHS) accreditation scheme.
The successful candidate will be provided with full training where required.
The Occupational Health Nurse reports to an occupational health professional designated by the CMO.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Pre-Placement Medical Screening, interpretation of results & compiling reports
• Case Management; Face to Face & telephone sick leave absence assessment / workplace
rehabilitation in collaboration with the relevant Occupational Physician
• Establishing & running OHN led workplace health surveillance and immunisation programmes
• Conducting ergonomic / VDU assessments as required
• OHN led workplace health promotion screening initiatives
• Annual review of clinical guidance documents, policies and procedures relevant to an
occupational health department. Ensuring these are kept in line with legislation, business
changes and audit requirements
• Maintaining adequate supplies and equipment and arranging for clinical waste disposal
• for the occupational health department
• Maintaining medical equipment calibration & certification
• Assist with the induction & training of other clinical occupational health staff as required
• Conducting audit & research relevant to the work of the CSOHD, assisting with publication of our
Activity Report, assisting with data access /medical record release, helping maintain our
SEQOHS accreditation
• Perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the CMO
SALARY
The salary scale for this role €55,935 to €66,126
Candidates serving in an analogous grade elsewhere in the public service may be appointed at a
salary point commensurate with their current remuneration, to include relevant allowances, subject to
certain criteria being met.
For applicants from outside the public service, where the Chief Medical Officer is of the view that
there are exceptional circumstances justifying an offer of starting pay above the minimum, the
specific sanction of the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform (DPENDPR)
will be required in advance of any offer being made.

LOCATION OF POST AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The position is based at our modern purpose built Occupational Health centre in Smithfield, Dublin
city. The service conducts regular nurse lead immunisation programmes in clinics in regional
locations such as Portlaoise, Wexford & Kildare, and OHNs are required to travel to these locations.
The Department operates regular hours Monday to Friday. This is a full-time post.
Occupational Health Nurses who have successfully completed induction may be able to work one
day per week from home (20%), primarily conducting telephone consultation clinics. This will be
operated on a trial basis, will be subject to business needs and may vary from time to time.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
The successful candidate will be required to undertake appropriate continuous professional
development (CPD) in the field of occupational health. This will be fully facilitated by the CSOHD.
In addition, they will be expected to undertake training and keep themselves informed of relevant
developments in health and safety policies, occupational health nursing professional standards and
other relevant legislation
